Plastic recycling in theat the heart of climate protection
PROJECT TOGO is setting new standards in the fight against plastic waste. Our goal is to raise awareness of waste prevention and promote recycling as a sustainable practice. We work with local communities to minimize environmental impact and recover recyclable materials.
Plastic pollution in the world's oceans is a global crisis. An estimated 4.8 to 12.7 million tons of plastic enter the oceans every year - a truckload every minute. The main reason? An abundance of plastic waste without adequate disposal and recycling structures, especially in emerging and developing countries. PROJECT TOGO is taking on this challenge: Through education and the establishment of effective collection and recycling processes, we want to make a significant contribution to environmental protection. After all, proper waste management is a decisive step towards a healthier planet.
Waste management in Togo: paths to sustainable development Togo, in the midst of its development phase, is confronted with growing volumes of waste. An innovative waste collection system in Kpalimé is making progress: small cargo bikes collect waste from restaurants, hotels and households for centralized disposal. This fee-based system is proving popular in larger cities. However, there is a lack of awareness about how to deal with waste, especially plastic, which often ends up in nature. Our goal is to promote waste prevention by sensitizing the population and thus contribute to the protection of the environment.
Procedure in detail:
From field research toRecycling product
1
Field research in Kpalimé: A look at the garbage
The natureOffice staff in Kpalimé carried out a detailed analysis of the waste generated. The aim was to get a clear picture of the quantity and type of waste: Quantity: recording the available quantities of residues. Quality: Analyzing the composition of the residues.
2
Lesen im Müll: Die Garbologie
Garbology used this phase to understand social lifestyles by analyzing waste. The focus was on identifying common wastes for product development. By analyzing 552 photos and developing waste categories, important insights were gained and comparisons were made with the questionnaire data. Black plastic bags, a local market product, were of particular interest and were subjected to a material analysis.
3
The theory: from plastic waste to recycled product
During this phase, students at the Technical University developed concepts for reusing plastic waste. They came up with ideas for woven baskets, knitting ropes and bags.
4
On the ground in Togo: Putting solutions into practice
In April 2002, students from the University of Applied Sciences in Trier, Germany, traveled to Togo to present the recycling solutions they had developed and to teach at a newly opened training center in Kotokopé. The quick understanding and interest of the participants demonstrated the success of the workshop. The support of the Chamber of Crafts emphasized the importance of the project.

Outlook
The biggest challenge is to share and deepen the techniques through extensive workshops. The goal is to create a self-sustaining dynamic through which the recycling techniques can be further developed and disseminated.
