The latest UNEP Emissions Gap Report shows that global greenhouse gas emissions continue to fall short of the targets set to limit global warming. Forecasts point to a worrying temperature rise of 2.5 to 2.9°C by 2030 if urgent action is not taken. In order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, emissions must be reduced by 28 to 42% by 2030.
Despite increased climate disaster management, far-reaching warming is underway. Current actions could lead to 3°C warming - well above the agreement's targets. All countries need to step up ambitious, low-carbon initiatives immediately. The wealthier G20 countries must provide financial and technological support to developing countries to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.
The first "Global Stocktake" during COP28 will influence new ambitious targets. The actions of this decade will determine whether we can achieve the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement.
If we do not urgently drive emission reductions, we will have to rely on uncertain CO₂ removal measures. Policy action is essential to achieve drastic emissions reductions and secure temperature targets.
NDCs play a crucial role in the fight against climate change. These self-imposed targets must be updated every five years and become increasingly ambitious.
