GHG Protocol welcomes new observers

4/23/25Reading time:

The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol is the global standard when it comes to recording and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. The protocol is now further strengthening its position: five major organizations - CDP, EFRAG, GRI, ISSB and SBTi - have been accepted as new observers on the Independent Standards Board (ISB). Sounds dry? But it's not - because it's about real benefits for CO₂ accounting in practice.

What does the IPM actually do - and why are observers important?

The IPM is the body that reviews and approves the standards of the GHG Protocol. It decides how CO₂ balances are recorded, reported and evaluated. The new observers - known as Observing Entities - contribute their expertise but have no voting rights. Nevertheless, they are directly involved when new or revised standards are created.

The observers represent a broad spectrum:

  • CDP bundles and evaluates environmental data from companies.
  • EFRAG develops standards for EU sustainability reporting.
  • GRI sets sustainability standards that are used worldwide.
  • ISSB ensures global comparability of climate-related financial information.
  • SBTi checks climate targets for scientific robustness.

Together with the GHG Protocol, these players are working to better align accounting, disclosure and target setting. The aim is to create a standardized and reliable system with which companies worldwide can measure and manage their emissions.

How can companies benefit from this?

For companies, the carbon footprint - i.e. the structured recording and evaluation of all greenhouse gas emissions - will become more transparent, comparable and easier to use. Standards that are coordinated with each other mean

  • Less duplication of work with different reporting formats
  • Greater acceptance and credibility with stakeholders
  • A more robust foundation for climate targets and ESG strategies

This doesn't just affect large corporations. Medium-sized companies that take sustainability seriously also benefit from this. This is because they receive reliable tools to meet legal requirements, minimize risks and take advantage of new market opportunities.
