Decarbonization strategy for companies.

Decarbonization made easy: We lead your company to climate neutrality

Decarbonization and climate protection - why less is sometimes more

Decarbonization means getting out of emissions and into a low-emission or ideally emission-free future. Reducing CO₂ emissions is not an end in itself, but a key lever in the fight against the climate crisis. In order to achieve the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Agreement, global greenhouse gas emissions must be drastically reduced - and quickly.

Companies play a key role in this. Not only because they are responsible for a significant proportion of emissions, but also because they can drive innovation and solutions. A decarbonization strategy gets to the heart of this change.

Decarbonization in companies - but with a plan and concept!

Definition and explanation.

What is a decarbonization strategy?

It is a structured roadmap on how a company can systematically reduce its CO₂ emissions - and it is a holistic concept. From the analysis of the current situation to long-term objectives - this is where all avoidance and reduction measures come together.

From efficient to investor-friendly

Opportunities for companies

A good decarbonization strategy in the company pays off. Not only for the climate, but also for business. Avoiding CO₂ today saves energy tomorrow - and therefore costs. Supply chains can be made more efficient and production processes optimized. And: banks, investors and public clients are increasingly paying attention to sustainable key figures - keyword sustainable finance.

Those who lead the way here score points in reporting - thanks to good sustainability ratings. A clear advantage in the competition for capital - and customer trust.

Successful decarbonization in 5 steps

  1. 1

Greenhouse gas balance and status quo

It all starts with the analysis. To be more precise: the CO₂ balance. If you want to calculate your carbon footprint, you can't avoid Scope 1, 2 and 3. Scope 1 includes direct emissions such as the company's own vehicle fleet or production. Scope 2 includes indirect emissions, for example from purchased electricity. Scope 3 covers upstream and downstream emissions, often the biggest challenge. In view of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), it is precisely this differentiation that will become mandatory in future. A well-founded emissions balance sheet is therefore not just a basis, but a regulatory necessity.

    Decarbonization strategy: definition of targets

What do we want to achieve and when? This question is at the heart of every decarbonization strategy. Companies are increasingly focusing on Science Based Targets (SBTs) - science-based targets that are aligned with the 1.5 degree target. In the long term, the aim is net zero - and therefore to reduce a company's greenhouse gas emissions to exactly zero.

  3. 3

    Derive measures

Now it becomes concrete. In this step, measures are identified, prioritized and translated into a realistic timetable. This could be the switch to green electricity, the electrification of vehicle fleets or new logistics concepts. In short: avoiding CO₂ wherever possible - in other words, real CO₂ reduction.

    Communicate results

Solid communication creates transparency and trust. Internally and externally. Stakeholders, customers and employees want to know: What is the company doing? How seriously does it take climate protection? Communication here means: Reporting, explaining, classifying - honestly, comprehensibly and openly.

  5. 5

    Monitoring & success control

Targets are good. Monitoring is better. A decarbonization strategy will only be effective if progress is regularly reviewed and readjusted if necessary. This requires suitable tools, KPIs and a clear reporting framework.

FAQs: Frequently asked questions

  • Decarbonization refers to the process by which CO2 emissions are reduced or avoided altogether. The aim is to replace fossil fuels with climate-friendly alternatives and thereby significantly reduce the carbon footprint - ideally to zero.

  • A decarbonization strategy helps companies to reduce their CO2 emissions in a structured and efficient manner. It is the basis for a climate-neutral transformation, leads to better sustainability ratings and ensures compliance with the requirements of lenders, banks, investors and legislators - for a competitive future.

  • Banks and investors are increasingly examining how sustainably companies operate. Companies that meet criteria such as those of the Sustainable Finance Initiative have easier access to capital, improve their risk assessment and signal responsibility - a real competitive advantage.

  • The ESRS are a set of binding requirements for sustainability reporting in the EU. They are part of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and define how companies must document their environmental, social and governance performance - an important instrument for transparency and comparability.

  • We guide you through the entire process: from the carbon footprint and strategy development to implementation and communication. With sound advice, digital tools and certified offsetting solutions, we put your decarbonization strategy on the road - in a very practical and concrete way.
