Calculating CO₂ emissions from buildings: partnership with SBC for climate-free construction

It all started with a simple request: whether we could help with the carbon footprinting of a construction project. Of course we could. And we did it so well that it became a partnership that is now an integral part of many projects. Whenever a new construction project is put on the table at SBC Frankfurt, we are involved when it comes to carbon footprints, emissions and climate protection strategies.

SBC is the first point of contact for construction companies and project developers - and stands for a holistic approach to planning and implementation. This means that all relevant experts work together right from the start. Coordinated, efficient and with a clear goal: sustainably better buildings. At natureOffice, we contribute our expertise in CO₂ balances, emissions reduction and offsetting. The earlier we are involved in a project, the greater the impact - and the benefits for everyone involved.

Why CO₂ balances are so crucial in construction

What surprises many people is that most emissions are not generated during the use of a building - but during construction itself. Shell construction, materials, transportation, machinery - all of these generate CO₂. That's why we start right here. Our task often begins on the basis of design plans. Even if not everything has been finalized yet, we can already provide valuable information with initial calculations - and show where emissions can be saved. Typical options include low-emission concrete, recycled steel instead of new material, cleverly selected insulation materials or alternative and circular building materials (in accordance with C2C) with a better CO₂ profile.

There is often a lack of detail, especially in the early phases. There are no exact quantities or lists. So we work with assumptions, area values and empirical knowledge. It's challenging, but feasible - if you know how. Later, when the building is completed, everything can be recorded precisely. However, by then it is often too late for real CO₂ savings. That's why our experience counts - and the ability to derive the right results from little information.

More than just a number in a report

Our work does not end with a CO₂ figure on paper. We actively support projects - with ideas, recommendations and practical solutions. This includes comparing different materials or construction methods, advice on the construction process, logistics and machinery used, suggestions for offsetting measures with high-quality climate protection projects and scenario comparisons to back up planning decisions.

A good example of this is the Hafenparkquartier Frankfurt, where a high-rise building with an atrium is being built. Together with SBC, we are supporting the project right from the start. We provided training for the building contractor - including on the choice of materials, logistics and sustainability goals. The result: a project that is on course for climate protection right from the start.
