Water and electricityas the foundation of the future
A basic supply of water and electricity is the backbone of well-being and socio-economic progress. However, many people around the world struggle to access clean drinking water - a challenge that is particularly acute in rural areas of Togo. Here, long walks to fetch water are commonplace, with serious implications for health and quality of life. At the same time, access to reliable electricity remains critical. Despite global progress in electrification, countries like Togo face significant energy challenges.
PROJECT TOGO is committed to improving this situation in a sustainable way by focusing on water and electricity supply, thus laying the foundation for future development.
Our project takes a practical approach to the challenges in Togo: We are changing the lives of many villages through innovative solar solutions and the construction of water infrastructure.
Light as the foundation for progress: In a world that is increasingly dependent on electricity, some countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, remain largely unlit. Togo is one of them: Countless villages are cut off from the grid, and children learn by the dim light of kerosene lamps. Our solar initiative has an ambitious goal: to light every home with a solar system, paving the way for a brighter future for every household.
Clean water as a human right: Electricity is not the only shortcoming - clean drinking water is also in short supply in Togo. Walking long distances to contaminated water is particularly stressful for children and women. By building wells and filter systems, we provide clean drinking water in our project communities, paving the way for health and dignity for all.
A forest asEnergizer
Each inhabitant of the project region needs 690 kg of firewood per year.
Deforestation plays an important role in Togo. Since the 1960s, trees, and even entire forests, have been seen as nothing more than freely available fuel. Togo, for example, has lost more than half of its forest cover since 1990, and less than 6 percent of the country's surface is forested. The result: increasingly bare, parched soils. Another consequence of deforestation is that the soil loses its ability to retain water. Rain, especially in the rainy season, no longer seeps away but causes erosion and washes away the last of the fertile soil from the fields.
The energy forest as a (first) permanent solution, the perfect circular economy An energy forest, close to the villages. Because we cannot stop the local people from cooking with wood or wood fuel. But we can stop them from cutting down intact trees or traveling long distances to collect them. Thanks to the Energy Forest, the wood needed to power our efficient stoves is right in your backyard.
It's all in the mix Teak is a particularly good species for short rotation plantations. It can be harvested for the first time after only three years, when the shoots are cut off at a height of 50 cm. After a few weeks, new shoots will grow around the cut and can be harvested three years later. Another equally important aspect is the overall structure of the energy forest and reforestation. For every tree removed, we plant twice as many. In this way, we guarantee the preservation and development of the energy forest.
