01 – WHY

Responsibility does not have to be far away to be important.

We believe: those who work, produce and live in a region are also connected to it. Not because proximity is the only form of responsibility, but because it allows us to see what a landscape needs – and because it makes commitment tangible.

Not just preserving. Evolving.

Nature does not stand still. Storms, diseases, drought and human use alter it. That is why it is not just about preserving areas. It is about strengthening structures, creating transitions and giving the landscape time to develop.

A NATURAL AREA IN MOTION

De Biesbosch: where water writes the landscape.

De Biesbosch is located in the Rhine-Meuse Delta in the Netherlands and is the largest freshwater tidal area in Europe. A labyrinth of creeks, willow forests, reed beds, and open spaces characterises the national park. High and low tide, rivers, and seasons constantly reshape this place.

This is precisely where its value lies: De Biesbosch is a natural area that provides a habitat for many plants and animals – and at the same time, a place where people can experience nature.

Water shapes everything.

Rivers and tides are constantly creating new transitions between land and water.

Diversity needs connections.

Willow forests, wetlands, reed beds and open areas complement one another.

Nature becomes part of everyday life.

The national park is an important local recreation area around Dordrecht.

02 – WHAT

A contribution enables work that can still be seen later.

Which measure is supported depends on the local need and is determined transparently for each commitment. Nederland Plus can, for example, contribute to

Plant native trees and shrubs

Rows of trees, groups of trees and woodland edges create transitions between open countryside and forest. They give the landscape structure and offer food, shelter and orientation to many species.

Redevelop damaged areas

When trees are lost due to storms or disease, gaps are left behind. New plantings suited to the site help to rebuild the functions of these areas step by step.

Thinking of nature and recreation together

The Biesbosch is both a sanctuary and a place of experience. Measures can therefore also help to preserve natural structures without losing the connection between people and their environment.

The specific assignment will be agreed in advance and documented later. The examples describe possible measures, not a flat-rate promise of impact.

A LOOK AT THE DEVELOPMENT

Arable land becomes space for nature. A gap can become a new forest.

In the Nieuwe Dordtse Biesbosch, agricultural land has been developed into nature and recreational areas. The focus is on wetlands, open water, meadows, reed beds, as well as tree and shrub structures. This recreates transitions that would be missing in a purely open polder landscape.

The reforestation following the ash dieback also demonstrates what regional commitment is all about: for safety reasons, non-viable trees had to be removed. Subsequently, new, native tree and shrub species were planted. So that an empty area does not simply remain empty.

2018

Landscape reimagined

In the Nieuwe Dordtse Biesbosch, the transformation of former agricultural land into a coherent natural and recreational area began.

2019/2020

Replanting after ash dieback

Contributions from Nederland Plus supported the planting of new trees and shrubs after large stands of unviable ash trees had to be removed.

2024

Carry on planting with the next generation

At Hania’s Polder, school pupils and the municipality of Dordrecht planted 34 native trees together. Groups and rows of trees there strengthen the transition between forest and open landscape.
