At the Odayeri and Kömürcüoda landfills, landfill gas is captured via wells and pipes. It is predominantly used in gas engines; excess gas is flared under controlled conditions. This page separates the technical activity, the methodologically calculated emission reduction, and the subsequent allocation of certificates.

WHY THE GAS SOCKET MATTERS

It is not the waste itself that contributes to climate protection, but the methane that is prevented from escaping.

Landfill sites produce methane-containing gas when organic waste decomposes. Without capture, some of this would escape into the atmosphere.

The project collects the gas, measures its quantity and composition, and feeds it into gas engines or a closed flare. The climate impact is not read directly from an individual well as a tonnage value: it is calculated from the monitoring data in accordance with ACM0001 and independently verified.

Why estimation, issuance and retirement are not the same thing: 818,841 t CO₂e is the annual expected value stated in the registry. Issued VERs are based on verified monitoring periods. Only a retirement takes specific serial numbers out of circulation and can document a specific use.

02 · WHAT THE PROJECT PROVIDES FOR

Capture gas, oxidise methane, utilise energy

The effect depends not only on the construction of the plants, but on the continuous operation of the gas collection system, the combustion and the monitoring at both locations.

Capture landfill gas

Gas wells and a pipe network collect the landfill gas generated during decomposition, instead of allowing it to escape uncontrollably over the landfill surface.

Use it or lose it

Gas engines burn the gas and drive generators. Excess gas is oxidised in a controlled manner in an enclosed flare.

Document operations

The gas quantity, gas composition, calorific value, engine and flare operation, as well as electricity quantities form the data basis for the subsequent calculation and audit.

03 · HOW A UNIT IS CREATED

Measured values are converted into a methodically calculated emission reduction.

ACM0001 describes how the use or controlled flaring of landfill gas is accounted for against a baseline without gas capture.

Set baseline

The reference scenario describes the deposition and decomposition of the waste without capture and destruction of the resulting landfill gas.

Measure gas and operation

Recorded gas volume, methane content, operating states and other parameters are assigned to the respective monitoring period.

Calculate methane destruction

Controlled combustion in engines or flares is methodically accounted for against the baseline. Grid feed-in can provide an additional calculated effect.

Verify and issue

Following independent verification, VERs with vintages and serial numbers can be issued in the registry. Subsequent retirement documents their use.

The gas collection system is part of the technical landfill infrastructure in a metropolis. However, the current registry entry does not show any additionally certified SDG 11 or 12 from this.
