PROJECT PROFILE · CERTIFICATE-BASED CLIMATE PROTECTION
Tropical Mix
Mainly native tree species are being established as mixed stands on formerly fallow and degraded pasture land in Panama. This page separates the visible reforestation from the calculated carbon sequestration, the risk buffer and the subsequent decommissioning of specific units.

WHY TIME AND RULES MATTER
A tree is visible. Its creditable climate impact only develops over years, measurements, and rules.
Tropical Mix is not an avoided deforestation project. The calculated impact is based on additional carbon sequestration compared to a defined baseline.
For this purpose, the development of biomass and – where methodologically considered – soil carbon are recorded, modelled and verified in monitoring periods. Project emissions, uncertainties and a risk buffer influence the quantity that ultimately appears as a verified unit in the register.

To put the quantities into perspective: the registry distinguishes between verified emission reductions or removals (VERs) and planned emission reductions (PERs). The 'Annual estimated credits' field indicates 509 and should not be equated with historical issuance volumes. For specific assistance, the product type, vintage, quantity, serial number, and retirement status must be verified at the transaction level.
02 · WHAT THE PROJECT PROVIDES FOR
Former pasture land is to be turned into managed mixed forest
The project comprises several areas and operators, each with their own management plans. Therefore, Tropical Mix is not a single homogeneous forest, but a joint project framework for different sub-areas.
01
Reforesting degraded areas
Formerly fallow land or land used extensively as pasture is planted and managed in the long term. The baseline primarily describes grassland and pioneer vegetation.
02
Build up mixed stands
The project documentation mainly mentions native tree species, as well as teak as a non-native component. The species composition and management may vary between sub-plots.
03
Combining use and protection
Depending on the area, the concept includes timber use, cocoa cultivation and designated Conservation Areas. Utilisation, reforestation and protection are therefore to be considered separately.
03 · HOW A UNIT IS CREATED
Carbon sequestration is accounted for over stocks and periods of time.
What matters is not only how many trees have been planted. What is relevant is the additional amount stored compared to the baseline within the methodological and temporal framework.
01
Set initial state
For the project areas, it is described how carbon stocks would have been expected to develop without afforestation.
02
Record growth
Area and stock inventories provide data on biomass development. Soil carbon is taken into account in accordance with the methodology applied and the monitoring.
03
Calculate net withdrawal
The additional storage is adjusted for relevant project emissions, uncertainties and further methodological deductions.
04
Check and buffer
An independent body audits the monitoring period. According to the Performance Certification Report, a risk buffer of 20% is then applied before net VERs are confirmed.
04 · DESCRIBED ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
Reforestation can change more than just a carbon footprint
The project documents list ecological and social indicators. These contributions must be documented independently and are not automatically to be assigned in the same amount to each individual VER.
AREAS
Revegetating degraded soils
The establishment of tree and root structures can reduce erosion and support soil functions. The development that has occurred must be proven via the respective monitoring data.
BIODIVERSITY
Mixed stands and Conservation Areas
Predominantly native species and designated conservation areas can promote habitats. However, this does not imply a comprehensive biodiversity status, nor is it equivalent to natural forest.
WORK
Employment and Qualification
Afforestation, maintenance, harvesting and monitoring create jobs. The scope, duration and distribution of employment are to be examined separately for the respective reporting period.
VALUE CREATION
Wood and cocoa
The management of timber stocks and the cultivation of cocoa are intended to generate income. Certifications and production methods apply only to the documented sub-areas and periods in each case.
DOCUMENTED SDG REFERENCES
The documents specifically associate the project with SDG 13 ‘Climate Action’ and SDG 15 ‘Life on Land’. In addition, SDG 8, SDG 12 and SDG 1 are addressed. An SDG association describes themes and indicators; it is not a seal of approval for a blanket achievement of targets.
05 · FOR SUPPORTING COMPANIES
An issued unit is not yet documented support.
A traceable allocation comprises at least:
01
Project name Tropical Mix and Gold Standard ID GS2940
02
Product type VER or PER, as applicable
03
specific quantity in t CO₂e
04
Vintage or monitoring period
05
Decommissioning date and serial number range
06
Beneficiary and documented purpose of use
06 · CLASSIFICATION AND COMMUNICATION
What the support means – and what it doesn't
A voluntary climate contribution is communicated separately from reductions within one's own value chain.
IT DOCUMENTS
IT DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN
a Gold Standard certified A/R project with issued VERs
a protected primary forest or a pristine natural landscape
a methodically calculated and monitored additional carbon sequestration
a continuous direct measurement of the bound CO₂
a risk buffer of 20% applied according to the test report
a guarantee against fire, storm, illness or other reversals
predominantly native species, mixed stands, and conservation areas
a comprehensive proof of biodiversity or equivalence with natural forest
documented social and environmental indicators
an equally large additional effect per VER
the decommissioning of specific units for a beneficiary
a reduction of own emissions or climate neutrality
