With REDD+, the net climate impact does not arise solely from the existence of the forest. The decisive factor is the difference between a methodologically determined development without the project and the monitored development with the project.

Consequently, the units issued depend on, among other things, the baseline, carbon stocks, observed deforestation, leakage risks and the rules on non-permanence risk. The registry entry makes the project and quantities traceable; the project documentation explains how they were calculated.

A standing forest is real. Nevertheless, the number of avoided emissions requires a verifiable basis for calculation and auditing.

02 · WHAT THE PROJECT PROVIDES FOR

Forest protection is more than just fencing off an area

The registry description lists industrial timber use, unsustainable firewood extraction and slash-and-burn agriculture as risks. The project approach aims to reduce this pressure and preserve the forest in the long term.

Address deforestation pressure

Conservation measures and changed land-use practices are intended to prevent forest areas from being lost or degraded in accordance with the assumed reference scenario.

Involve communities

The project documentation describes local and socio-economic measures. Which activities were implemented and which results were achieved must be examined separately for each monitoring period.

Monitor forest development

For the carbon footprint, forest areas, changes, and carbon data are recorded in accordance with the applicable project and methodological rules. A single photo cannot replace this monitoring.

03 · HOW A UNIT IS CREATED

Avoided deforestation is calculated from two developments.

A methodological baseline without a project is compared against the monitored development within the project. Only the verified difference can form the basis for VCUs.

Determine reference development

The baseline describes the level of deforestation and forest degradation that is expected to occur within the defined framework in the absence of the project.

Areas, forest types, and designated carbon pools are used to calculate emissions associated with forest loss.

Monitor project development

Observed forest loss, project emissions, and potential leakage outside the project area are accounted for in accordance with the methodology.

Consider risk and verify

For the non-permanence risk, units are contributed to a common AFOLU risk buffer. Following independent assessment, VCUs can be issued for a specific monitoring period.

Forests, climate and livelihoods are connected – yet their evidence remains separate

In addition to the greenhouse gas balance, the project description refers to social and ecological goals. These are not automatically quantified in the exact same way for every unit issued.

Conservation of existing carbon stocks

If forest is preserved compared to the baseline, the associated emissions can be avoided in the balance sheet. The result depends significantly on the adequacy of the baseline and the monitoring data.

BIODIVERSITY

Preserve habitats

The protection of tropical forest areas can preserve habitats and ecological functions. A concrete impact on species or biodiversity does not automatically result from each VCU.

MUNICIPALITIES

Alternative livelihoods

Local income and land-use measures can reduce economic pressure on the forest. The scope and distribution of these effects must be examined in the respective project reports.

WATER AND SOIL

Ecosystem functions

Forest conservation can support the water balance and soils. However, the VCS register entry alone does not quantify these impacts as a result of each retired unit.

THEMATIC SDG RELEVANCE

There are obvious links to SDG 13 ‘Climate Action’ and SDG 15 ‘Life on Land’. Further social connections may arise from project activities. This classification is not a seal of quality and does not in itself prove that objectives have been achieved.

Active units in the register are not yet assigned to an enterprise.

The registry status indicates active VCUs. Whether specific units are available and which monitoring period they belong to must be checked at the level of the respective vintage and serial numbers. Documented support only arises through the unique allocation and retirement of specific units. These include:
