Voluntary climate contributions

How we allocate, verify and document voluntary climate contributions.

How we allocate, verify and document voluntary climate contributions.

In addition to reducing their own greenhouse gas emissions, companies can support climate action outside their value chain. natureOffice refers to such voluntary support as a voluntary climate contribution.

A climate contribution does not change the corporate carbon footprint or the product carbon footprint. It is not deducted from the calculated emissions and does not create a mathematical residual value. Even if the amount of the contribution is based on a volume of emissions, this does not turn the contribution into an emission reduction within the underlying balance sheet.

This framework describes how natureOffice delineates voluntary climate contributions, allocates them to reference objects and periods, verifies project and proof-of-ownership information, procures and retires issued units, and documents the concrete application in a Corporate Contribution Record.

In short: we document the CO₂ value and the voluntary climate contribution separately. The link between the two serves to ensure traceable allocation – not offsetting.

01

Contribution logic

Support for climate action outside of your own value chain – without deduction from the PCF or CCF and without a neutrality claim.

02

basis of assessment

Unambiguously designated enterprise, product, service or sales volume, period and, if applicable, balance sheet version.

03

Proof

Project, standard, methodology, vintage, quantity, registry, retirement, and further quality characteristics are documented where applicable.

04

Public classification

The Corporate Contribution Record makes the allocation traceable via a record ID. It is not an award or an environmental quality claim.

SCOPE AND APPLICATION

General framework – specific record

This page describes the general documentation and quality rules of natureOffice. It does not contain any customer-specific emission values, contribution amounts, project allocations or decommissioning data.

How the rules were applied in a specific case is shown in the respective Corporate Contribution Record. This specifies the reference object, the reference period, the origin and, if applicable, the version of the emission data, the contribution approach, the supported project, the allocated units, and the documentation status.

The framework explains the rules. The Corporate Contribution Record shows their concrete application.

01

What is a voluntary climate contribution?

A voluntary climate contribution is a voluntary financing or support of climate protection measures outside of one's own value chain. It takes place in addition to the measures that a company takes to avoid and reduce its own emissions.

On which specialist foundations is the framework based?

For voluntary climate contributions, there is no single, generally binding standard that definitively regulates all issues, from the balance sheet to project quality and corporate communication. The natureOffice framework therefore combines several clearly defined principles:

What is the relationship between climate contribution and one's own emission reduction?

The voluntary climate contribution complements your own climate action. It does not replace it and must not delay it.

06

Which forms of voluntary climate contributions does natureOffice distinguish between?

Tonnage-based climate contribution The contribution is expressed in tonnes of CO₂e. The prerequisite is that a corresponding number of clearly identifiable emission reduction or removal units has been issued in accordance with the rules of a designated programme and has been allocated to the contribution or retired.

08

What requirements apply to underlying emissions data?

A voluntary climate contribution can be aligned with a balanced emission quantity. The underlying value must be clearly designated for this purpose.

09

How is the emission-related reference quantity determined?

The reference quantity is the emission volume on which the level of a tonnage-based contribution is aligned. It remains separate from the actual contribution quantity.

How is the rounding up to whole tonnes calculated?

For a tonne-for-tonne aligned contribution, natureOffice rounds the calculated reference quantity up to the nearest whole tonne of CO₂e.

13

What does the 'tonne for tonne' contribution approach mean?

"Tonne for tonne" describes exclusively the quantitative scaling of the contribution: for each full or started tonne of the designated reference quantity, at least one issued unit of one tonne of CO2e is allocated and retired.

What does the year or vintage of a unit mean?

The vintage refers to the period in which the underlying emission reduction or carbon dioxide removal was achieved in accordance with the rules of the project programme. It is not to be equated with the year of purchase, retirement, or documentation.

21

How are units procured and uniquely assigned?

Procurement involves more than just ordering or paying for credits. For a documented tonne-based contribution, the units must be clearly identified and legally and technically available to natureOffice or the intended beneficiary.

What is the significance of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement?

Article 6 regulates forms of voluntary cooperation between states and contains requirements for the international transfer and accounting of mitigation outcomes. A so-called corresponding adjustment serves to consistently record certain bilaterally transferred outcomes in national greenhouse gas inventories.

26

How are social and environmental impacts addressed?

In addition to their greenhouse gas impact, many climate protection projects pursue other social or ecological goals. These can include, for example, health, access to water, education, income, biodiversity or local employment.

27

How is direct project financing without credits documented?

Not every meaningful form of project support leads to the issuance of tradable carbon credits. natureOffice can therefore document direct financing or in-kind contributions as an independent form of voluntary climate contribution.

CLASSIFICATION

A climate contribution is not made understandable by a single symbol

A record ID or a QR code can uniquely assign a contribution and facilitate access to information. However, it only becomes traceable through the disclosed principles: reference object, time period, emission or quantity data, contribution approach, project, standard, vintage, allocated quantity, registry and retirement.

The Corporate Contribution Record is therefore not an award. It documents what a company has additionally supported – and equally clearly, what does not follow from this.

It is not the link to a CO₂ value that makes the contribution to an offsetting scheme. The disclosed separation is what makes it traceable.
